as he takes 2nd Place at the NABBC 2022 Conducting Competiton

BEST OF BRITISH for Jack

Following an intense but enjoyable week working with he Reg Vardy band, and meeting eminent composer Philip Wilby, the weekend saw you compete in the National Association of Brass Band Conductor’s annual conducting competition, Jack went up again 10 fellow conductors.

Jack was awarded the highest placed UK competitor award, as well as 2nd place overall.

Boris Oppliger, of Switzerland was awarded first, with Emil Björklund in 3rd place.

Jack conducted sections of Peter Graham’s Essence of Time in the semi finals with the Hammonds Band, before being selected to conduct Horner’s ‘For the Love of a Princess’ in the evening final with the Eccles Borough Band.

Jack was delighted to be selected for the semi-finals, and finals, from a strong field of candidates, and relished the opportunity to both focus on his conducting, as well as work with two wonderful bands, with some exceptional musicians. o

On talking of his time at the competition, Jack said:

“I’m both delighted and very humbled to have been awarded Best UK entrant, and 2nd place at the NABBC conducting competition in a strong field today.

My sincere congratulations go not only to winner, Boris, a wonderful man who thoroughly deserved the title, and Emil in 3rd place, but to all involved, both in conducting, playing and most importantly organisational capacities.


The event today was excellent, featuring total commitment from the Rainford and Eccles Borough Bands and NABBC’s own Mareika Gray, and James Bolt in his exceptional leadership and organisation of the event.

Thank you all for your kind wishes of support and congratulations - it’s truly wonderful to have such friends and colleagues.”

Jack is now focusing on a recording project of his feature length work ’The Snow Queen’ with the Carlton Main Frickley Collier Band, as well as preparing for Derwent Brass’ 2nd and 3rd concerts in their trilogy of concerts celebrating 30 years of Derwent Brass.
